This case study focuses on a product taken from concept to production. While officiating a game, the client, a basketball referee, bit down on his whistle to prevent from blowing it. A small crack in the mouthpiece closed on his lip, and eventually resulted in the painful removal of a chunk of his lip. The client then recognized the need for an alternative means of sanitizing his whistles other than using hot water, leaving them dry, brittle, and susceptible to cracks.
The client came to us with the idea of utilizing ultraviolet light to sanitize and deodorize his whistles. After a little bit of research into the technology, we began to conceptualize what a case serving this function would look like and require. We moved forward with CAD designs of a multi-piece injection molded case, and partnered with a company who was already manufacturing a UV-light case for another application to assist in the product’s production. The result is the Clean as a Whistle case
